A Vatican attitude like this isn't likely to get me going to Mass again: Cardinal urges legal action against Da Vinci Code
In the latest Vatican broadside against "The Da Vinci Code", a leading cardinal says Christians should respond to the book and film with legal action because both offend Christ and the Church he founded.This guy coulda been Pope? Outstanding.
Cardinal Francis Arinze, a Nigerian who was considered a candidate for pope last year, made his strong comments in a documentary called "The Da Vinci Code-A Masterful Deception." [emphasis added]
"Sometimes it is our duty to do something practical. So it is not I who will tell all Christians what to do but some know legal means which can be taken in order to get the other person to respect the rights of others," Arinze said.Did anybody else read this and think "Nice store you got here. It'd be a shame if something, you know, happened to it?"
"This is one of the fundamental human rights: that we should be respected, our religious beliefs respected, and our founder Jesus Christ respected," he said, without elaborating on what legal means he had in mind.My copy of the Declaration says "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness." Arinze must have an earlier draft that includes "...and not to have one's Religion Mocked."
C'mon now, Francis. Think this through. Are you prepared to go after Chris Ofili? Serrano? Celtic Frost? Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin? Martin Scorsese? Every fundamentalist Bible-thumper who preaches that Catholics are Satanists? Geez, that'd take a whole Vatican bureaucracy, wouldn't it?
But then again, they've had some practice with that.
Of course, if you have read the book that the novel is based upon (and believe it), this response is quite a bit more tame than you would expect. I mean, if they can conspire to kill a Frankish king, or hold a minor crusade against a growing gnostic sect, mobilizing an army of believers to act against a movie. Of course, if they had that kind of power, you'd think that they would have done something before the movie was completed, or even before the books were even published.
Didn't the Pope say about the movie something to the effect of, "it's just a movie -- it's not worth getting upset over"? Maybe this Cardinal didn't get the memo.
This is why Arinze isn't the Pope.
I'm a Catholic, and I loved the book. It's fiction, and I thought that the "blasphemic themes" were interesting, and if anything, bolstered the notion that Christ was a human.
Leaders like Arinze give the church a bad name.
Remember, "I come as thief..."
It is quite a joke that the Vatican and Catholic Church have the gall to accuse the author of a novel of attacking their fantasies and dogma. Remember that this is the same organization that manufactured fake relics and miracles for many centuries. This is the same group that massacred and tortured people for having a mind of their own. This is the same group of deluded deceivers that makes more noise about a fictional book and movie than about child raping priests, aids, famine, or even the Holocaust! The Vatican is proving that seeking the truth is a real threat to their dogma. They're so afraid of people uncovering the truth, that they are attacking other versions of fantasy (DaVinci Code) and blatantly obvious Gnostic symbolism as threats to their long-term smoke and mirrors, hocus-pocus, and mumbo-jumbo. How thoroughly enlightening, since this goes a very long way to proving that Christianity is based on strong lies and delusions. If it weren’t, they would be confident of surviving intense scrutiny. Since they aren't and since they have gone to such great lengths to suppress and oppress those seeking truth and wisdom over the centuries, their deceptions are, once again, laid bare for all to see. This time though, they are the ones to walk into a well-laid trap...
