I need some help with MP3 tagging. I have a bunch of compilation albums, and when I rip them in MusicMatch, CDDB assigns the artist for each song as 'Various Artists' rather than the actual artist. What I want is for the tag to have the actual artist, but the MP3 file itself to still be filed in a directory with the rest of the album, and I don't want to have to manually edit three hundred MP3 tags to accomplish this. Does anybody know of a tag management tool that can help me out?

The first thing that'll help out is, use CDex instead of musicmatch. :)
I've looked around for something like this, that'll allow me to view based on filename, directory structure, and internal file tag, and select one of the three to apply to all of them... no joy as yet. I have found some enterprising sorts in the tcl community who are working on stuff close to it, if you're so inclined:
http://wiki.tcl.tk/2?Q=mp3
Unfortunately, what gets put into the tags depends on how the album was entered into CDDB. Now, CDex does allow you to choose freedb rather than CDDB, but if the album is in freedb the same way, you are in the same boat as before.
MP3 Tag Tools (http://sourceforge.net/projects/massid3lib) looks interesting, but it doesn't appear to have any connection to any cd databse. And even if you use MusicMatch/CDDB and then edit the tags using MTT, you still have to edit each file individually (but if CDDB put the artist in the title, you could cut/paste rather than type them in). I do not know of any tool that would allow you to automatically do that.
Ooops... I managed to filter out every instance of CDDB in the post. Sorry, smug comment about not using musicmatch withdrawn. ;) I'll keep you posted if I find anything that might be of use.
I use Tag&Rename [http://www.softpointer.com/tr.htm ] to tag & organize my library. It does not handle ripping, I use CDex for that, but it does have the ability to tag compilations with the appropriate artists' name.
It actually pulls the metadata from Amazon and includes cover art where available. Highly recommended.

Tim - fixed yer triple-post. Hope you don't mind. And thanks much for the tip - I think that's exactly what I need.
